This website is a laboratory for my imagination – a place for thinking out loud, planning projects and documenting my research. [Note: This website is under construction, as my schedule permits-mk]

Why a website?

First, it will help keep me on track and focused. Second, it provides a place to display my research and projects. Third, it serves as a way to keep my patron(s) up to date on my activities, even though we may be geographically distant from one another. Lastly, it will allow fellow magicians (and others with a need to know) to see ‘behind the curtain’ of my performances and offer feedback or advice. Those areas of the site will be password protected for various reasons (see the ‘Rules’ page for details).

About Me

My name is Matthew Kelley, and I’m a member of the SCA (see “About the SCA”, farther down the page). I’m an Army veteran, and a Florida native.

Within the SCA, I am known as Gunnarr inn Hviti, a 10th century norseman from Iceland, living in Jorvik. My name is pronounced “GOON-arr in-VEE-tee”, and means ‘Gunnarr the White’. Not only is my hair turning white with age, I’m a huge fan of polar bears – my heraldry has a polar bear on a blue background.

I am a warrior, a craftsman, and a skald. A skald is norse entertainer, usually a poet or storyteller. My medium of choice is Performance Magic.

There is little archaeological evidence for specific magic methods before 1500 AD, although we know they existed (based on historical writings and paintings). Therefore, much of what I do is experimental archaeology – figuring out how a period magician might have achieved certain effects. I try to entertain and educate my audience, performing magic that is based on period technology and techniques.

About the SCA

The SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe.

Our “Known World” consists of 20 regions, called Kingdoms, with over 30,000 members participating in countries around the world.

We dress in clothing of the Middle Ages, and attend events which feature tournaments (archery and armored fighting), royal courts, feasts, dancing, classes, and more.

If you’d like to learn more about the SCA, check the links on my Resources page.

I’m a member of the Barony of Wyvernwoode (Tampa, FL). I attend our practices for Rapier/Heavy Combat/Live Weapons as well as  various SCA events in Florida. Look for heraldry with a polar bear on it.
